Refrigerator Water Filters: Common FAQs Answered

Refrigerator Water Filters Common FAQs Answered

Table of Contents

Replacing a refrigerator water filter is one of the easiest ways to improve the quality of your drinking water, but minor issues often arise after installation. To save you time and frustration, we’ve put together this practical troubleshooting guide based on the most frequently asked questions from real customers. This guide addresses the most common questions and issues customers experience during refrigerator water filter replacement, along with practical troubleshooting tips.

Black Water or Black Particles After Installation

The sight of black water or small black particles after installing a new refrigerator water filter can be alarming, but in most cases, this is completely normal.

Refrigerator filters are made from activated carbon from coconut shells. During production, most of the carbon ash is removed, but it cannot be completely eliminated. During initial use, any remaining carbon particles are washed out with water. This behavior is common in all filters for refrigerator water using activated carbon.

What to do:

  • Flush the filter for about 5 minutes
  • Dispense and discard 2–3 gallons of water
  • The black water should stop after flushing

If black water or carbon fines continue after extended flushing, the filter may have been damaged during shipping. In this case, please contact us and we will recommend the best solution.

Water Flow Is Slow After Filter Replacement

A slower water flow after installing a new refrigerator water filter replacement can occur for several reasons.

Common causes include:

  • Unstable household water pressure
  • Temporary changes in water quality
  • Air trapped inside the new filter

Troubleshooting steps:

  1. Remove the filter, gently shake it 2–3 times, and reinstall it.
  2. Reinsert the filter firmly. You may need to apply slightly more force.
  3. Twist the filter until it fully stops and locks in place(usually about a 1/4 turn).

Water Dispenser Is Leaking

It’s normal for the dispenser to drip a few drops of water immediately after use. However, continuous dripping after installing a new refrigerator water filter usually indicates air in the water line.

What to do:

  • Flush the dispenser for about 2 minutes to remove trapped air
  • If leaking continues, reinstall the filter carefully
  • You may also reinstall the old filter temporarily to compare results

If the problem persists, there may be a problem with the dispenser itself

White Floating Particles in Water

White floating particles can have various causes, depending on their behavior.

If the particles disappear after the water has sat for a few minutes, they are likely tiny air bubbles released from the new refrigerator water filter.

If the particles are solid, remove them and gently break them up.

  • If they can be broken up, they are likely mineral deposits, such as calcium or magnesium carbonate, common in hard water. These are not harmful, but a water softener may be necessary to completely dissolve them.
  • If the particles are solid and cannot be broken up, please take a photo and contact us for further evaluation.

No Water or No Ice After Installation

If water does not dispense or ice production stops after replacing the refrigerator water filter, the most common causes are:

  • The filter is not fully seated
  • Air is trapped in the system

What to do:

  • Remove and reinstall the filter, ensuring it locks into place
  • Dispense water continuously for several minutes to purge air
  • Allow up to24 hours for ice production to resume

If the issue continues, please contact us with your refrigerator model number.

Noise After Installing a New Filter

Unusual noises such as humming, gurgling, or vibrations after installation are usually caused by airflow through the water line.

This is normal after a refrigerator water filter replacement and usually resolves after flushing with a few gallons of water. If the noise persists, please contact customer service.

Hot or Warm Water Dispensing

If the refrigerator dispenser releases warm water:

  • This is usually due to standing waterin the internal water line
  • It is not related to filter performance or safety

Simply dispense water for a few seconds until cooler water flows.

Filter Indicator Light Will Not Reset

The refrigerator water filter itself does not reset the indicator light automatically.

How to reset:

Press and hold the RESET button for 3 seconds, or follow your refrigerator’s user manual instructions

If the light does not reset:

  • Check if Child Lock / Control Lockis enabled and deactivate it
  • Open the refrigerator door and press any button to wake the control panel
  • If the lock icon appears, disable it and retry resetting

If the light still won’t reset, the issue may be related to the control panel or electronic harness. Please send us a photo of the control panel and your refrigerator model for further assistance.

How Often Should You Replace a Refrigerator Water Filter?

Most refrigerator filters should be replaced every 6 months, or sooner if:

  • Water flow becomes noticeably slower
  • Water taste or odor changes
  • The filter indicator light turns on

Timely replacement ensures optimal filtration and protects your refrigerator’s water system.
